Destreza, Applied to Spanish Sword, Rapier and Sabre

La Verdadera Destreza, the school of Spanish fencing as founded by Don Jeronimo Sanchez de Carranza at the end of the 16th century established a new approach to fencing in Spain, which influenced weapons combat up to the beginning of the 20th century. In this workshop/class, the continuum of this approach of La Verdadera Destreza will be explored from its foundations in the 16th century with the early Spanish rapier, subsequently with the 17th century Spanish cup-hilt rapier and finally with the late 19th century Spanish Sabre. The participants should expect to leave this workshop/class with a more clear comprehension of how Spanish fencing theory remained the same and how the particular weapon in use informs the application of that theory.

  • Sidesword
  • Cup-hilt rapier
  • Sabre
  • Fencing mask
  • Fencing jacket
  • Leather gloves
