The Secret Language of the Sword Fight

In this class we will look at the body positions and what they mean in the overall possibilities of the fight. As we move through the class, we will work our way from the bottom of the body and through the meaning of the chosen guards.

We will look at the feet and legs to determine what kind of step they will most likely make and in which direction. We will also look at the shoulders and guard to determine what kind of attack they are most likely to make. We will also discuss the placement of the hands on the sword, and what the placement of the lead hand and how he is holding onto his pommel and what that means.

We will not be learning to ‘anticipate’ their action, because anticipation is guessing. Instead we will learn to ‘understand’ the adversary so that you can choose to defeat the action, intercept it or to avoid his action. If time permits, we will also learn to develop counter guards to counter their action.

Equipment:
  • Longsword
  • Fencing mask
  • Gloves
