German Medieval Martial Arts
This nine hour, three day class will examine fundamental principles of the late medieval German Master Johannes Liechtenauer's Art of Fencing as viewed through three weapon forms: longsword, sword and buckler, and dagger. These three will allow us to explore the effects of weapon range (long, mixed, and short) and hand coupling (both hands together, and used separately) on tactics and technique. Basic guards and blows will be covered, along with techniques for breaking, and initiating, attacks from above and below. The course will draw upon the works of Master Ringeck, Kal, Talhoffer, Lignitzer, and others.
